Food Scrap Collection | 7th Av Sunset Park GM (Apr)

Volunteer with GrowNYC's Compost Program to promote composting in New York City. Every Friday, food scraps are collected from neighborhood residents at the 7th Av Sunset Park Greenmarket and transported to a local compost site for processing. Volunteers will help Compost Coordinators manage this busy food scrap drop-off site by assisting with outreach and physical work. No experience necessary, just bring a positive attitude and enthusiasm for waste reduction, composting, and recycling!

 

Volunteer tasks:

• The volunteer will primarily be assisting the Compost Coordinator in communicating the basic FSDO information to Mandarin-speaking members of the public as well as appealing to them to start composting their food scraps at the 7^th Ave Sunset Park Greenmarket.  Most frequent topics:
• FSDO hours, day, time
• What is composting and why food scraps should be diverted from landfills
• Options for composting your food scraps in NYC
• How to participate in the 7^th Ave Sunset Park Greenmarket drop-off
• Accepted items, types of containers, freezing scraps, etc.
• Volunteer will assist the Coordinator with these conversations as they emerge at the drop-off site
• Once well-versed, the volunteer can distribute English/Mandarin flyers at intersections and parts of the surrounding park with high foot traffic
• The volunteer can also range around the surrounding blocks with the Coordinator bringing flyers and laminated posters to nearby business establishments, organizations, and other institutions (would require coordination with me so that I can watch the site while they’re away from it.

Requirements:

Volunteers must be 18 years or older, have previously attended the GrowNYC Volunteer Orientation, and signed our waiver.
