Description:
Cycling is a fascinating sport that requires good physical condition, balance, endurance and tactics. Special Olympics include time trial and road race events in different distances. Every athlete riding his/ hers bike aims at traveling at the best possible time and arrive at the finish line first.
Event Information Desk: Volunteers will be responsible for signing in volunteers, giving out volunteer assignments, and distributing volunteer shirts. Volunteers are also responsible for managing hospitality and answering questions from spectators and coaches.
Timers: Timers will use stop watches to time each competitor's race in its entirety from start to finish. They will report the competitor's time to the official, located at the finish line. Timers will be asked to assist with cleanup at the end of the event.
Starter: Starter will be responsible for starting road races and sprints with the use of a whistle, verbal command, or flag. For Sprints; they will be responsible for maintaining an interval start for competitors. Starters will be asked to assist with cleanup at the end of the event.
Officials Road Races & Sprints: Officials will be responsible for enforcing Special Olympics rules for cycling and observing the field of play for violations and reporting those violations to timekeepers. One official will be at the start line, and one halfway through the course. Officials will be asked to assist with cleanup after the event.
Course Monitors - Road Races: Volunteers will observe and assist competitors with staying on the course during road races. In addition, they will help maintain the safety of competitors while on the course. One will be placed at each major turn of the course. Monitors will also man the entry/exit to the course at MetraPark. Monitors may be asked to assist with cleanup at the end of the event.
Marshals - Road Races & Sprints: Marshals will be responsible for confirming all competitors are present for their divisions and lining up all confirmed competitors for the start. Marshals will be asked to assist with cleanup at the end of the event.
Score & Timekeepers: The volunteers will be responsible for recording all competitor's times as reported by timers, and then handing off the heat sheets to awards team. Volunteers may be asked to assist with cleanup at the end of the event.
Set Up: Volunteers will be responsible for the following:
Teardown: Help take down candlesticks, flag rope, signage, and ensure all gear is back with the Venue Director & SOMT staff at the end of the event.
