Citizen Science: Box Turtle Connection

Description:

Box Turtle Connection is a 100 year, Citizen Science project that aims to build a long-term database to serve as a conservation tool and a model for current and future turtle research. Join us in learning how to track, band, and collect data on the box turtles that live in Walnut Creek Wetland Park.

 

Duties and Impact:

Banding, tracking, and monitoring for box turtle activity in a section of Walnut Creek Wetland Park assigned to them upon arrival. Box turtle populations are in serious decline, and this initiative is contributing to the study and conservation of this native species and strategies for their longevity and the protection of their habitat.

 

Work Environment:

The event will take place outside on uneven terrain with access to facilities at the nature center.

 

Requirements:

  • Ages 14+
  • Complete a release form (if prompted). Those under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature

Other Instructions:

  • Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Wear close-toed sneakers or hiking boots
  • Bring your own filled water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat
  • We will supply boots and waders as needed and all surveying materials

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
