Opportunity Name:
Invasive Removal Days at Horseshoe Farm

Description:

Join staff in removing invasive, non-native plant species from Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve.

Duties and Impact:

Volunteers will use handsaws or loppers to cut and remove invasive plants from designated areas. Volunteers under the age of 12 will not be able to use hand tools to cut away invasive plants, but will be able to help drag them out and pile them up. Only volunteers ages 18 and up will be able to use hand saws.

Invasive species out-compete the native plants that animals rely on for food and shelter. By removing these problem plants, we are giving our native plant and animal species a chance to thrive.

Work Environment:

Volunteers will be working in the woods on uneven terrain. The farthest that we will be from a restroom will be 1 mile. The work will be physically demanding.

Requirements:

  • Ages 14+. Those under 16 must have a parent/guardian present
  • Complete a release form (if prompted). Those under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature

Other Instructions:

  • Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing which includes long pants and long sleeves
  • Wear close-toed sneakers or hiking boots (you will be turned away for not wearing appropriate footwear)
  • Bring your own filled water bottle

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
