Opportunity Name:
Mini BioBlitz at Horseshoe Farm

Description:

Spend the morning joining us document wildlife for the worldwide, City Nature Challenge! Help us search for and take photos of wildlife to add to our natural resources inventory of Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve.

Duties and Impact:

We will use iNaturalist to document our observations, so a smart device with the app is required. After a brief tutorial, you will venture into the preserve on your own (or with your group) to document your observations. Some experience with NC wildlife identification is recommended.

You will help us document plants and wildlife in the preserve, that our staff may not find on their own. These observations will contribute to our master inventory list. These lists help us determine management practices for future conservation of the preserve.

Work Environment:

You will be able to go on your own throughout the preserve. Volunteers will be working in the woods on uneven terrain, but staying on trail as much as possible. There will be a restroom on site.

Requirements:

  • Ages 16+
  • Complete a release form (if prompted). Those under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature

Other Instructions:

  • Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Wear close-toed sneakers or hiking boots (you will be turned away for not wearing appropriate footwear)
  • Bring your own filled water bottle

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
