Wake County Senior Games, Track and Field

Description:

Wake County Senior Games is an Olympic-style event designed to create year-round health promotion and competition for participants that are 50+ years old. The WCSG is hosted by various local businesses and municipalities, and rely heavily on volunteers to help us make these games a success. The track and field portion of this event will include competitions in the football throw, softball throw, 50/100/200/400m dash, 800/1500m run, 1500m power walk, 5k power walk,1500m race walk, 5k race walk, running long jump, standing long jump, shotput, and discus.

 

Duties and Impact:

By volunteering for this event, you are helping to provide a platform for active adults to showcase their talents. As volunteers you would assist with several different jobs associated with this event and will be assigned upon your arrival. This may include:

  • Setting up and placing equipment, putting out tables, and helping staff get ready.
  • Participant check-in, giving out shirts, and handing out snacks.
  • Scoring/time clock operating (you will receive onsite training when you arrive).
  • Cleaning up (gathering and removing equipment, boxing up leftovers, etc.).
  • Finally, be ready to cheer on our athletes! Invite your friends to come watch this amazing event!

Work Environment:

Volunteers will be working outside in the elements. Volunteers will be on their feet a majority of the time, standing and walking. There will be a restroom on site.

 

Requirements:

  • Ages 12+. Those under 18 must have a parent/guardian or a club/school adult representative present.
  • Complete a Wake County Senior Games waiver. Those under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature.
  • Volunteers must have good concentration and be able to continuously follow their racer while counting their laps.
  • Volunteers must know how to use a stopwatch.

Other Instructions:

  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing as well as comfortable shoes such as sneakers for standing and walking. Volunteers must also wear the shirt provided to them at check-in.
  • We provide some drinks and snacks, however, if you have special diet needs, please bring your own food. Meals are not provided; you may want to pack a small cooler.
  • Volunteers should bring a hat or umbrella, sunscreen, and may bring an easily portable/bagged chair. 
  • Although we hope to stick to this event's timeframe, be aware that we may go over, or even be done early, depending on number of athletes that register.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
