Kids Backpack Packing Ages 6-12 Saturdays

This is the only opportunity for younger kids (6-12 years old) to volunteer so please do not sign up if you are over 17 years and older unless you are the parent/adult coming to volunteer with the child.  Please contact Betsy Van Dyne at bvandyne@secondharvest.org. if you have any questions.

 

The Backpack Program provides a backpack full of nutritious, ready to eat or easy to prepare foods that is sent home on weekends and holidays when school meals are not available. 

 

Please note that one spot = one person.  If you have a family, each adult and each child must be scheduled.  Volunteers help us pack the backpacks that will then get distributed to the students thru the school system.  Because the food is all purchased and we do not rely on donations, backpack packing is done on a schedule around the arrival of our food orders, the flow of the number of backpacks being sent out and our staff schedule.  PLEASE NOTE THAT IS DOES TAKE A MIN. OF 10 VOLUNTEERS TO PACK.  IF YOU SCHEDULE AND DO NOT SHOW, THE SYSTEM WILL REMOVE YOU FROM ANY UPCOMING SCHEDULED DATES.  

• Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes as you will be in our warehouse
• Attire - please wear comfortable clothing. No controversial wear. Shorts of a respectful length are permitted.  No crop tops or undergarments showing. 
• No weapons are permitted on our premises 
• This event is for ages 6+  and must be supervised by an adult during the entire shift and during bathroom breaks.  No younger siblings are permitted.  Each person including children and adults must be on the schedule. 
• Please be courteous to other volunteers and our staff by arriving 10 minutes early so that we can begin promptly at 12:30 PM.  
• Anyone arriving 15 minutes late will not be able to enter the building.  We close and lock the door 15 minutes after the start time, as we don't have a receptionist on the weekends.  Please arrive a few minutes early to get checked in as it hurts our production if our staff has to go over the instructions for the second time to latecomers. Arriving 10 minutes early will give you time to sign-in, make a name tag and use the restroom if needed.  
• Please do not bring valuables as we have no place to store them and are not responsible for missing items. 
• Volunteers are provided bottled water.  No food, drinks, gum, headphones are permitted.  We do not allow cell phone use during the volunteer shift. 
• We schedule staff and activities around the number of volunteers expected. Kindly confirm you are attending 7-14 days in advance of your scheduled date.  If you cannot attend, cancel your spots AT LEAST A FEW DAYS BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED DATE so others can sign up.  Groups - please cancel at least 7 days in advance of your scheduled date.
