Opportunity Details | Food Forest at Walnut Creek Wetland Park
Opportunity Name:
Food Forest at Walnut Creek Wetland Park |
|
Description:
As a part of our continued commitment to our community, Walnut Creek Wetland Park is beginning installation of a 'food forest', a public fruit orchard, along the park-adjacent stretch of the Little Rock Creek Greenway. The work on this date will consist of planting native fruit trees and fruit shrubs, mulching the area, removing invasives in the creek-side riparian buffer, and installing some temporary fencing.
Duties and Impact: Volunteers may be using tools such as shovels, pitchforks, wheelbarrows, loppers, post pounders, and wire fencing material in this first stage of creating a food forest.
This food forest, and eventual community garden, are intended to provide education and take a small step towards addressing food insecurity in Southeast Raleigh. Volunteers will be part of a growing and evolving project to beautify our neighborhood, support education around small-space native gardening, and help provide free, available, healthy foods as the project grows.
Work Environment: We will be working outside in the elements. There is the possibility for uneven ground. The work will be physical and likely dirty. We will be just across the street from the nature center with access to restrooms, shade, and water.
