Softball - Mankato


Event Description:

Special Olympics Minnesota Area 9/10 Softball competition is being held Saturday, August 24th, in Mankato, MN.


  • You May sign up for one or more shifts.
  • The time listed includes time for sign-in and orientation.
  • You will receive a volunteer t-shirt to wear at the competition.

Volunteer Role Description


Volunteer training will be provided for all positions--you don't need to have any experience, just a great attitude and willingness to be a part of a day that athletes look forward to all year!


Awards Volunteers: This position will be working as part of a team to set up awards, announce awards, and award athletes their ribbons or medals.  These individuals will take results that come in and fill out the award label for the correct athlete and then put in on the appropriate ribbon or medal.  Then they will set up awards by division to be handed out to athletes.  Some members of this team will be responsible for announcing the awards by announcing the athletes name and place while other members of the team award the ribbons or medals to the athlete. 


Delegation/Volunteer Check-in: Assist in helping check in registered delegations and volunteers.  Will hand delegation packets to head coaches and provide t-shirts and name tags to volunteers.


Event Setup:  Assist Special Olympics staff & event management team by helping setup the softball tournament. Task include setting up chairs, tables and banners.


Scorekeeper/Field Announcer:  One announcer and one scorekeeper will be placed at a field.  Scorekeeper writes down scores, statistics and requested information using softball score book, and operate scoreboard.  Announcer is responsible for announcing player’s name, sponsors of the events and Special Olympics Sportsmanship before and during the game.


Umpire: Officiate softball game (General softball knowledge is required). 


*Please note training for each of these positions has been scheduled into your shift time. You will be trained before you are placed in any of these positions. Allow 5-10 minutes before your scheduled shift time to allow time to check-in and receive your t-shirt.



  • 15 years and older can volunteer by themselves.
  • 12-14 year olds must be accompanied by parent, guardian, or chaperone.
  • 11 years and younger are not given volunteer assignments, but are welcomed and encouraged to be cheerleaders as long as they are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone.  Please do not register for any position.
  • 12-14 year olds in a group situation need a 4 to 1 ratio-meaning one adult (18 years old or older) for every three children.  These groups usually include scout troops, school classes, church groups, etc.
