Event Description:

Special Olympics Minnesota is currently seeking volunteers to help with the 2019 Summer Games at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul. Summer Games will be held June 21-23 and includes basketball, swimming and track & field.

  • This event is held outdoors in O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
  • All volunteers will receive a souvenir t-shirt to ensure that they are identifiable during the event. They must be worn when attending the event.
  • Orientation and Training is scheduled to start at the time you sign up for. Please arrive at the check-in area 10-15 minutes early to allow time to check-in, receive your t-shirt and be on time for your training.
  • You will receive a reminder email with additional parking and check-in information one to two weeks before the event.

Age Eligibility for Event Volunteers

  • 15 years and older can volunteer by themselves.
  • 12-14 year olds must be accompanied by parent, guardian, or chaperone.
  • 11 years and younger are not given volunteer assignments, but are welcomed and encouraged to be cheerleaders as long as they are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone.  Please do not register for any position.
  • 12-14 year olds in a group situation need a 4 to 1 ratio-meaning one adult (18 years old or older) for every three children.  These groups usually include scout troops, school classes, church groups, etc.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteer training will be provided for all positions--you don't need to have any experience, just a great attitude and willingness to be a part of a day that athletes look forward to all year!

  • Awards Assistants - As a team, these positions receive timing sheets, enters the times onto the score sheets and ribbons, and assists with the ceremony awarding the ribbons to athletes.
  • Field Assistant - This position works with the Volunteer Event Manager that will run each field event. Helps with measuring throws & jumps and writing down results to hand into awards area. Field events include softball throw, shot put, tennis ball throw, standing/running long jump & high jump.
  • Staging/Escorts - This position will involves staging athletes for their race or field event by heats and setting athletes up in their lanes for track and field events. Escorts will then lead the athletes from the staging are to their race or field event, Volunteers will be working directly with the Staging/Escort Volunteer Event Manager to make sure the event stays on schedule.
  • Timers - Responsible for timing athletes in their track lane.

Event Meeting Location: Volunteer check-in is located at Scooters in the Anderson Student Center. Parking and shuttle information will be provided one to two weeks before the event.
