Event Description:

Special Olympics Minnesota Area Unified Flag Football Tournament is being held Saturday, September 21st   at the Oakland Park Softball Complex in Cohasset, outside of Grand Rapids, MN. 

 

We are in need of volunteers to serve as officials, scorers, timers, and to help with an Individual Skills competition, awards, and serving lunch.

 

No Football experiences? No problem! A detailed training is given at the beginning of each shift. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with registration, score table, awards, officiating games and much more. Flag football is the newest sport offered by Special Olympics Minnesota. Flag football is offered as a Unified Sport, which means individuals with and without disabilities are on the same team. The Flag Football season runs from August through October.

 

Flag Football Volunteer Position Descriptions

  • Football Skills Station‐ Stationed at a specified skill area coordinating a specific activity.
  • Scorer Table Assist with running scoreboard or writing down stats on score sheet (2 people at each table).
  • Official ‐ Officiate a unified football game. *must have foottball knowledge and comfortable making judgement calls. If you would like to register for this role, please contact volunteers@somn.org.
  • Awards Assistant‐ Help organizes and presents the medals to the athletes as names are being called.
  • Awards Announcer Announce names of athletes as awards are presented.
  • Volunteer Photographer Position: We are looking for experienced photographers to capture exciting moments at our sports competition. This is to include the Opening Ceremony, the various events at the competition and the Awards presentation at the conclusion of the event. If you are a great photographer with an eye for capturing the moment, and you click with people as well as the shutter … we want you!
  • Lunch Service: Helps to set up and serve lunches to Athletes and families.

Volunteer training will be provided for all positions--you don't need to have any experience, just a great attitude and willingness to be a part of a day that athletes look forward to all year!

 

Age Requirement for Event Volunteers

Ages 15
Can sign-up as an individual by themselves.

Ages 12-14
Can register alongside an adult over 18, must be accompanied by parent, guardian, or chaperone. (Please sign-up both the adult and child 12-14)

In a group situation need a 4 to 1 ratio-meaning one adult (18 years old or older) for every three children.  These groups usually include scout troops, school classes, church groups, etc.

Ages 11 and Younger
Individual ages 11 years old and younger are not given volunteer assignments but are welcomed and encouraged to be cheerleaders as long as they are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone.  Please do not register for any position.
