Construction Volunteers 

We need the help of volunteers like you to help us make the dream of decent, affordable housing a reality for all our neighbors in Omaha! 

 

TASKS: 

We use our volunteers for just about every aspect of the build from framing, and siding, to finishing and cleaning up - so it’s best to register with a big heart and open mind. Generally speaking, your entire build site will have one main task for the day and it will be indicated in the “Additional Event Details” section at least two days prior to your volunteer date.  

 

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:  

No tools or experience are necessary, our supervisors will be happy to train everyone on the tasks of the day.  

 

DRESS CODE: 

Please wear closed toe shoes/weather-appropriate clothing. Remember this is an active construction site when choosing your attire.  

 

AGE RESTRICTIONS: 

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers between 16 and 18 years of age will have restricted use of tools and other equipment.  

 

WHAT WE’LL PROVIDE: 

We’ll provide personal protection equipment (Hardhats, glasses, earplugs, gloves, etc.), the necessary tools, skilled staff to train you, and a safe build site.  

 

ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST PICK UP PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT AND SIGN IN AT THE VOLUNTEER CENTER BEFORE GOING TO BUILD SITE. The Volunteer Center is a converted shipping container located in the volunteer parking lot at 6424 Forest Lawn Ave.

 

WHAT TO BRING: 

Please bring a reusable water bottle so that you can fill up at our water station as needed. Disposable cups will be provided in case you forget to bring a reusable water bottle. There will also be a lunch break during the day (usually around noon), we do not provide lunch so please bring your own lunch or you may leave the site to go out for lunch.  

 

LOCATION/ASSIGNMENT: 

All current build opportunities will be located at our development Bluestem Prairie. For navigation to this development/build sites, please use the address for our volunteer parking lot (6424 Forest Lawn Ave). All build sites are located within walking distance of the parking lot.

 

Your actual build site location/assignment along with other important information will be automatically sent you in via email two days prior to your volunteer date.

 

PARKING: 

Build site volunteers please use the designated volunteer parking lot located at 6424 Forest Lawn Ave. If the lot is full, please utilize any legal street parking in the area.

 

If you are volunteering at one of our warehouses you are able to park in any of the available parking stalls. 

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE: 

Court-ordered community service cannot be completed on Habitat Omaha construction sites. 

 

WEATHER CANCELATIONS: 

For snow-related cancelations, Habitat Omaha will follow the closing policy of Metropolitan Community College (MCC).  If MCC classes are canceled or scheduled for early dismissal, volunteers will also be canceled/dismissed. 

 

In most cases we will be canceling (or dismissing early) outdoor work assignments for volunteers will be anything lower than a temperature of 10° or higher than a temperature of 95°. 

 

In case of rain, we try to send a reassignment/cancelation email and text the day before your assignment, or occasionally, day of. Please be sure to check your email and phone if rain is forecasted on the day of your volunteer opportunity. We always try to reassign you to an indoor assignment, however; because most of our work is outside/unsheltered, we are not always able to reassign. 

 

We will email and text volunteers who are signed up if there is a cancelation or location change.
