Description:

The Community Connections Café is a welcoming space where people with memory loss or dementia, and their care partners, can come to connect with others and support their brain health while socializing.  The program is informal with the intended atmosphere of a local coffee shop where participants can chat over a beverage, do something creative, or play a game.   

 

Volunteer will support program by creating a friendly and inclusive atmosphere where participants can enjoy refreshments, engage in activities, and build meaningful connections.

 

Tasks/Responsibilities: 


  • Greet and welcome clients as they arrive at the café.
  • Take attendance each session and share it with the staff supervisor.
  • Assist in serving simple refreshments like coffee, tea and snacks to participants.
  • Engage participants in conversations, activities and games to foster a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Assist in setup, takedown and maintaining cleanliness within the café space, including tidying up after activities and ensuring safety standards are met.
  • Ensure safe participation of clients and encourage participation.

Qualifications:  


  • Enjoy working with others, comfortable initiating conversation and including others.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Patient, friendly and outgoing; comfortable in a non-competitive, inclusive environment.
  • Experience working or communicating with people living with dementia will be an asset.
  • Be physically able to participate in the program.

Time Commitment & location:


  • Every third Wednesday of each month
  • 2:00pm – 5:00pm (program is from 2:30pm – 4:30pm and the extra time allows for setup and take down)
  • In-person at the Yonge and Eglinton Office (20 Eglinton Ave West, 16th Floor, Toronto)
  • Face masks will be provided and encouraged to be worn throughout the duration of the program.

Orientation/Training:


  • Orientation to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
  • Training for the position provided by the staff supervisor and Volunteer Services team.
  • 3 hours online modules: Dementia 101, 102 and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act training. 

Screening:

All applicants will be required to submit a volunteer application, attend an interview and provide two references to be contacted by the Volunteer Department. Applicants must also agree to a background check.

 

Supervision:

This role will be supervised by the staff supervisor and Volunteer Services team.
