Description:

Making Strides – Springtime on the East Side is a 6-part walking series held at Ashbridge’s Bay Park and participants will enjoy activating their body, socializing while get steps in and enjoy a chat and a drink at the Boardwalk Café on us!  The program will start with a warm-up and then a 45-minute walk.  Volunteer will support program by welcoming participants, ensuring everyone has the necessary equipment, walking with participants, tracking attendance, facilitating the group, and providing assistance in case of emergency.

 

Tasks/Responsibilities:


  • Meeting and greeting participants in the meeting spot.
  • Ensuring participants have the necessary equipment.
  • Leading warm up and cool down exercises.
  • Walking with participants and tracking attendance of the group.
  • Facilitating conversation and social engagement.
  • Assisting the individual in case of emergency.

Qualifications:


  • Enjoy working with others, comfortable initiating conversation and including others.
  • Patient, friendly and outgoing; comfortable in a non-competitive, inclusive environment.
  • Experience working or communicating with people living with dementia will be an asset.
  • Be physically able to participate in the physical activity component of the program.

Time Commitment & Location:


  • Fridays – May 17th – June 21st, 2024 (6-week series )
  • 1:00pm – 3:30pm (program is from 1:30pm – 3:00pm, extra time allow for setup and wrap-up)
  • Ashbridge’s Bay Park – Boardwalk Café (1681 Lake Shore Blvd E, Toronto, M4L 3W6).
  • Face masks will be provided and encouraged to be worn throughout the duration of the program.
  • Please come prepared with comfortable supportive shoes and a bottle of water.

Orientation/Training:

·         Orientation to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto

·         3 hours online modules: Dementia 101, 102 and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act training.

·         Specific training to the position will be provided by the Active Living Programs Coordinator.

 

Screening:

All applicants will be required to submit a volunteer application, attend an interview and provide two references to be contacted by the Volunteer Department. Applicants must also agree to a Vulnerable Sector Check.

 

Supervision:

This role will be supervised by the Active Living Programs Coordinator.
