The Rooftop Roots Program Assistant (IN-PERSON)

Description:

 

The Rooftop Roots is a 6-week series rooftop gardening program that provides opportunities for each participant to explore the sensory delights of gardening and the joy of connecting with nature and each other at their own pace and in their own style.  The Volunteer will support the program by helping with setup, welcoming clients, tracking attendance, encouraging, and ensuring the safe participation of all clients and cleanup.

 

Tasks/Responsibilities:


  • Setup/cleanup program space (including program equipment, program supplies, seating) before participants arrive and after completion of program.
  • Welcome and greet participants to the program.
  • Direct participants to the program room and assist with coat check as needed.
  • Assist participants in engaging with the program who need more 1-1 support.
  • Participate in the program to model positive engagement.
  • Take attendance during the program.
  • Participate in the post-program debrief.

Qualifications:


  • Enjoy working with others, comfortable initiating conversation and including others.
  • Patient, friendly and outgoing; comfortable in a non-competitive, inclusive environment.
  • Experience working or communicating with people living with dementia will be an asset.
  • Not afraid of getting hands dirty.
  • Be physically able to participate in the program.

Time Commitment & location:


  • Tuesdays – May 6th – June 17th, 2024 (6-week series) except May 20th
  • From 12:30pm – 3:00pm at Canoe Landing Community Centre (45 Fort York Blvd, Toronto, ON M5V 3Y2)
  • Face masks will be provided and encouraged to be worn throughout the duration of the program.

Orientation/Training:


  • Orientation to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
  • Training for the position provided by the Community Programs Coordinator
  • 3 hours online modules: Dementia 101, 102 and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act training.

Screening:

All applicants will be required to submit a volunteer application, attend an interview and provide two references to be contacted by the Volunteer Department. Applicants must also agree to a background check.

 

Supervision:

This role will be supervised by the Active Living Coordinators.
