Big Lake Young Athletes: April 3-May 8, 2024

Special Olympics Minnesota and Big Lake Community Education are excited to partner together to offer Young Athletes to local families. 

 

We are hoping for a few dedicated volunteers to help as lead teachers and program assistants, supporting children 2-7 years of age both with and without intellectual disabilities learning new sports skills through songs, games and station activities.

 

All volunteers are required to complete Special Olympics Minnesota's Level 1 Training & a background check, which will be sent to you once you register!

 

Ideally, you will be able to help for each session. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your shift starts. If this is an issue, please reach out!

 

Volunteer Roles:

• Young Athletes Teacher (Lead)

• Must be 18+ years old
• Must complete a volunteer application, level 1 training and background check
• Must be organized, great with kids, respectful, understanding, energetic, able to delegate to assistants and inclusive
• Receives detailed training from SOMN staff person
• Receives lesson plans for each session
• Prep and lead each class using training and lesson plans given by SOMN. Example: scheduling out what each class will look like prior. Day of, leading the class in warm ups, setting up equipment/activities, leading cool downs.

• Young Athletes Assistant:


• Assistants support Leads in running safe & supportive activities for Young Athlete participants
• Must be 15+ years old. 

• Young Athletes Role Model:
  
  • For volunteers 12-14 years old who would like to assist!
  • Must have a parent/guardian present who is 18+ and becomes a YA Assistant.
