Special Olympics Minnesota's Regional Southeast Track & Field competition is being held on May 12 and we are looking for volunteers to help make the day happen! We hope to see you there!
No track & field experience? No problem! A detailed training is given at the beginning of each shift. You're welcome to sign up for any of the following roles:
- Event Manager
- Join the Special Olympics team as a member of our event team! Event Managers help run competitions with SOMN staff in the Rochester area on April 30 and May 21! Contact us to learn more!”
- General Event Support:
- Check in and welcome athletes, teams, and volunteers.
- Clerk: This position assists the Head Starter as they get the athletes placed in their correct lanes and ready for their race! This position is mostly standing/walking.
- Staging:
- Prepare competitors for their upcoming races.
- Escort competitors to the starting line.
- Timer:
- Record times for competitors.
- Field Events Assistant:
- Manage and record scores for 1-2 field events.
- These include:
- Shot Put, Tennis Ball Throw, Softball Throw, Running Long Jump, Standing Long Jump
- Awards Announcer:
- Announce names and places of athletes during award ceremony.
- Awards Assistant:
- Organize and prepare awards for athletes.
- At least one assistant will work as runner, bringing athletes from lanes to awards area.

Volunteer Expectations….
- Volunteers must be 15 years or older
- 11-14 year old volunteers are welcome when volunteering with chaperone/parent/guardian 18+.
- Interested volunteers who are under 11 are welcome to cheer on athletes as fans in the stands with chaperone/parent/guardian 18+.
- You may sign up for one or more shifts.
- There is no smoking, alcohol consumption, or drug use by volunteers.
- Abusive behavior toward athletes, other volunteers or staff will not be tolerated.
- Please don't exchange personal information with any athlete.
- Cancellations
- If event is canceled you will be notified by email & text message.
- Cancellation calls are made only on the morning of the event.
- Wear
- Comfortable clothing & shoes.
- Volunteer t-shirt (given when you check in).
- Parking/Transportation
- Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your shift starts to check in.
- Parking is available on site.
- Please contact us if you would like any support with other transportation options.
- Pack
- Any meals or snacks needed-lunch will not be provided. (Concessions will be available to purchase on site. Please contact us if this presents any hardship or prevents your ability to volunteer).
- A water bottle.
