2024 Opening Eyes - Summer Games (Stillwater)

Description:

Special Olympics Minnesota's Summer Games is being held June 21-23 and we are looking for volunteers to help run Opening Eyes screenings at the event! Volunteers who would like to stay all day should sign up for morning and afternoon shifts. 

 

Through Opening Eyes, athletes receive free screenings in a fun, welcoming environment. Opening Eyes is a 12-station evaluation including, lensometry, visual acuity, far cover test, autorefraction, tonometry, color vision, stereopsis, and external & internal eye health tests. Through our generous partnerships with Essilor (lenses) and Safilo (frames), eyewear is provided for athletes.

 

Special Olympics -Lions Club International Opening Eyes is changing lives in communities across the globe, providing free eye assessments, prescription eyewear, sunglasses and sports goggles to people with intellectual disabilities! 

 

Volunteer Expectations.....

  • We are seeking volunteers with Certificate and current licensure as eye care professionals such as Optometrist or Ophthalmologist, Optometry Students, Optician or Optical Tech/Assistants. Or relevant professional experience-we would love to have you involved so please contact Jeff Prendergast at jeff.prendergast@somn.org with any questions.

Thank you for volunteering with Special Olympics Minnesota! We count on you and you play a very important role in our success!

  • Wear
    • Comfortable clothing & shoes. This role will be in a covered tent. 
    • Volunteer t-shirt (given when you check in).
  • Parking/Transportation
    • This is our busiest event of the year-please plan to arrive 20 minutes before your shift starts to find parking & check in. 
    • Please contact us if you would like any support with other transportation options. 
  • Check In
    • Volunteer Check In will be in front of the Pony Activity Center.
    • Training is scheduled to start at the time you sign up for.
  • Pack
    • Any meals or snacks needed.
    • Lunch will be provided to volunteers who stay all day only
    • A water bottle.
    • We recommend leaving personal items (purses, bags, etc.) at home as we don't have the space to store any items & SOMN is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.   
  • Cancellations
    • We count on you and couldn't run this event without your support! Please notify SOMN as soon as possible if you need to cancel your volunteer shift. 
  • Volunteers will be notified of a cancellation (due to weather or for any other reasons) or an update to the schedule by email & text, most often this happens the day of the event to maximize the potential for athletes to compete.
  • Keep in Mind
    • All volunteers are expected to follow our Volunteer Code of Conduct.
    • The relationship between Special Olympics and volunteers is an “at will” arrangement, and termination can happen at any time without cause.
