Event Description:

The Samaritan Inn shelter opened in 1988, as a collaboration between five downtown churches. Today Samaritan serves homeless men who need safe, temporary shelter for a maximum of 90 days. In 2018, Samaritan provided 26,242 nights of shelter to 662 different men.

Shelter guests check in early during Overflow Season, so it is especially important that all volunteers sign up in advance and plan to serve for the full 6:00 PM - 7:30 AM overnight shift.

Here's an overview of what you can expect from the overnight volunteer shift!

Overnight shelter volunteers help in a variety of areas, including preparing and serving dinner and breakfast to our shelter guests, as well as watching the camera monitors for a two-hour shift throughout the night. Volunteers will have the opportunity to join our guests for social time and devotions after dinner. A separate volunteer dorm with your locker, bed, sheets, pillows and blankets is provided. Separate bathrooms are also available to volunteers. The minimum age to volunteer in the shelter is 18 years old. Volunteers aged 17 years old may serve with an accompanying adult for the duration of the shift.
