Opportunity Name:
Bagging Room at TLFB Grocery Distribution - April-May 2024

Description:

Hi!  Thank you for volunteering your time to help out at Twin Lakes Food Bank.

Please wear close-toed shoes for your safety, and bring a reusable water bottle.  Also, please plan to park at Mt. Olive Church located across the street from the food bank.  Please park on the side that is NOT directly across the street from TLFB so it is easier for our guests to park closer.

ALSO, please take time to review the following roles and responsibilities BEFORE you volunteer:

BAGGING ROOM
(2 volunteers. 8:30 start)
First and foremost, treat people with kindness!
During Shift:
22 12/14/2023
• Prepare brown paper shopping bags according to list of items on wall in bagging room. Any
changes to the “1-2 bags” inventory list on the wall for will be made by the Director of
Operations.
• Take completed bags to the Meat/Dairy Counter and place on bag shelf.
• Check Meat/Dairy Counter bag supply regularly throughout the shift to determine if more bags
are needed.
• Please restock canned and boxed goods on bagging room shelves to set up the next day’s
volunteers for success. If you need help, ask warehouse or operations volunteers to assist you.
o Arrange food by like items, keeping the oldest items in front for easy distribution. Utilize
“FIFO”. FIFO stands for First In, First Out and is one of the most common practices in
food inventory management. This is when the stock that was first in should be taken out
first and used first. This will help ensure that the least amount of food will pass its
expiration date. FIFO helps with inventory tracking and to minimize food waste in the
supply chain.
o Try to place all of the items facing up and out, and place same size items together.
• Make sure bag shelf in Meat/Dairy Counter is fully stocked before your shift is over.
• If you are running low on brown paper bags, replenish from the shed off the back patio. If the
stock in the shed is running low, notify Operations Staff (Byron, Lennie, Ericka) in advance so we
can bring stock over from the off-site warehouse.
• If possible, have a good inventory of completed bags completed in the bagging room before your
shift is over.
• Sanitize bagging table 2-3 times during your shift
• If requested by Registration Staff, prepare unhoused bags. See sign on wall in bagging room for
contents. All items for bags are in black crates to the right of the egg station. Either deliver to the
registration area or ask them to come and pick them up.
• If you are unsure about an expiration date, there is a food dating guide on the wall to reference.
Close:
• Replenish brown bag stock if needed
• Sanitize Bagging Table (daily)
• Sweep Bagging area including Egg Sorting area and area by walk-in freezer (daily)

EGG SORTING (covered by various volunteers each day, either from Operations or Bagging
Room)
• Inspect each egg for cracks. Discard cracked eggs in the “Broken Eggs” plastic bin located on the
bottom shelf of the deli refrigerator.
29 12/14/2023
• Put good eggs in 12 pack cartons. Only use 18 packs if there are no 12 packs left BUT be sure to
only put 12 eggs in; do not put 18 in! Any extra 12 packs are in the shed off the back patio.
• Excess cardboard 18-packs can go into the shed nearest the warehouse for the Garden Manager
to compost. If we have too many plastic 18-packs, they can be recycled in the recycle dumpster.
• Once 12 good eggs are in the carton, write today’s date on the top of the carton.
• Cross out the date stamped on the side of the egg carton.
• When finished, sanitize egg sorting table (daily).

Thanks!
