Description:

Objective: To enhance the overall patient experience and to supplement the work of the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute staff by assisting and interacting with patients, their families and visitors.  

Training:
    General UM Rehab & Ortho Volunteer Orientation
    Department Specific Orientation.

Duties Include: 
    Operating office equipment: telephone, computer, fax and copier. 
    Assisting the team as they prep and sterilize instruments. 
    Assisting the team with stocking the department and core. 
    May deliver and pick up equipment/supplies from and to various areas of the hospital.
    Supporting staff in assigned project-based work.
    Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:
    Possess a positive, service-orientated attitude and compassion for patients.
    Be able to communicate clearly and follow directions.
    Be able to demonstrate initiative. 

Responsibilities:
    To maintain confidentiality at all times.
    To work effectively with others. 
    To recognize and respects the needs of our patients and their families.
    To ask for help when needed. 
    To report any safety issues to supervisor/staff.
    To follow the policies and procedures outlined in the Volunteer Handbook.
    To be able to lift 15-20 lbs. 

Volunteers may not do the following: 
    Transfer or handle patients.
    Handle soiled linen.
    Handle medications. 
    Handle contaminated equipment/supplies.
    Assist patients with meals unless you have been trained and cleared with the nurse.
