Opportunity Name:
Student Success Center Volunteer-Allegra Westbrooks

Description:

Project Description: The Student Success Center at the Library is a pop-up learning space designed to provide a supportive learning environment for students in elementary school (K-5th grade). Students are invited to put their name on the list upon arrival, to be called upon by a trained Library volunteer to get support in completing a homework assignment, practice math or reading skills, or learn how to access Library resources. We are seeking volunteers who can commit to a two-hour block at a Library location one time a week for the school year (or at least one semester).

Hours: Two hours per week on Tuesdays from 4:30- 6:30 p.m.

Responsibilities: Volunteers commit to staying in the Student Success Center for a 2-hour window in the afternoon, one day a week. Students will not be required to register, so volunteers should be aware that while we hope to seek students in the Student Success Center weekly, there may be days when students do not come to the Student Success Center. K-5th grade students will fill out a short form to seek assistance with one of these three options: 1. Assignment Completion 2. Practice Skills OR 3. Connect students to Tutor.com. Volunteers will be trained on these three tasks, and understand that the goal is to focus on providing helpful encouragement and guidance, NOT tutoring.

 Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Patient, tolerant, and caring manner.

  • Previous experience with children a plus, or previous education experience preferred.

  • Must be able to communicate clearly in a tactful, courteous and pleasant manner with library staff, children, and parents.

  • Punctuality and reliability are a must.

  • Should be able to define and explain instructions to children.

  • Work quietly and independently.

  • Neat appearance.

Training: On-the-job training provided.  All volunteers are required to participate in a Student Success Center Training session prior to your first appointment (self-paced virtual training).

As a Volunteer you will: Acquire new skills and gain recognized work experience. Expand your social horizons. Help local children gain confidence and skill in academic skills that they will need for life. Help build a literate and literacy-oriented community. Contribute to the success of your public library.
