Dorothea Dix Garden Volunteer

Project Description:

Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources is seeking individuals interested in volunteering for the Dorothea Dix Garden Volunteer Program. Individuals must have availability to meet on the last Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., depending on staff needs. Staff will reach out each month to program volunteers for a specific date. Perspective volunteers will need to complete an application, background check, and agreement, all of which will be emailed to you upon registration.

Dorothea Dix Park is Raleigh’s largest city park. The 308-acre site blends historic architecture and rich landscapes into a unique destination in the heart of Raleigh.

Volunteer Duties:

Garden volunteers will help with maintenance and horticulture needs across the park. Garden volunteers will work alongside Parks staff to complete these tasks as well as training. Responsibilities may include planting spring and winter annual beds and seasonal bulbs, as well as related tasks such as pruning, weeding, refilling dog waste bag stations, collecting litter and debris, and more.

Work Environment:

Volunteers will be working outside, so please dress for the weather. Volunteers need to wear loose, comfortable clothing that can get dirty as well as closed-toe shoes. The grounds will be uneven, and up to a mile of walking may be required. There are restrooms on site for volunteers. Volunteers must have some form of transportation to move across the park, such as a car or bike.

Volunteer Requirements:

This is an ongoing, year-long opportunity. To volunteer, you must be at least 18 years old. After attending training, volunteers are needed to assist once a month during the week as scheduled by staff. A volunteer application and background form must be completed and passed in order to participate.

Per department policy this event cannot count towards court-appointed or suggested community service hours.

Please only register for one ongoing service opportunity at a time.
