Opportunity Name:
Mountain Island "Dungeon Master" (DM) for Dungeons & Dragons

Description:

In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master (or "DM"), the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore. The DM describes the locations and creatures in an adventure, and the players decide what they want their characters to do. Then the DM, using imagination and the game's rules, determines the results of their actions and narrates what they experience.

Hours: As a DM, the volunteer would need to commit to running a monthly Saturday afternoon one-shot (1:00-5:00 PM; this timeframe includes set-up, the adventure, and clean-up).

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a D&D program for 4-6 attendees, depending on the volunteer’s comfort level.
  • Run an engaging program that is rewarding for players and maintains library values. D&D at the library provides a welcoming experience to all players. As the DM, the volunteer is also responsible for facilitating a session in which all players feel safe to be themselves.
  • Spend adequate time reading and preparing the story for each session, including characterization of non-player characters (NPCs), map making, and adventure crafting. The volunteer would be able to come to the library for preparation time before each session or may prepare on personal time.
  • Enact the set-up and take-down of each session, including but not limited to putting away materials, tables, chairs, etc. The library has basic materials necessary for running a D&D session, but the DM would be responsible for providing any additional desired materials.
  • Communicate regularly, efficiently, and directly with library staff with regard to the program's preparation and progress each session

Qualifications:

  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. All selected candidates must complete a background check and a minimum commitment of six months.
  • Strong communication skills are needed.  Applicants should be dependable, cooperative and flexible.
  • A volunteer DM requires adequate experience as determined by library staff; prior experience playing D&D as a DM is required.

Training: Training with regard to expectations of Library Volunteers will be provided prior to beginning. Guidance for DMing within a library setting will be provided as needed.

As a Volunteer, you will: Develop presentational skills. Expand your social horizons. Help grow creativity and community among participants. Contribute to the success of your public library.
