Description:

Skilled seamstress wanted to engage teens and preteens in sewing projects such as upcycling, cosplay, accessories, and more. Sewing machines and material are provided. Experience working with teens is preferred. This is a semester long commitment with ability to renew. Please note this position is for the library and not for the theatre.

Hours:

Present up to two workshops per month with a project-based outcome for a small group (6-8 teens and preteens); after school hours anywhere from 2:30p-7:30p M-Th, Saturday 11a-3p or Sunday 2p-4p or on CMS Days 11a-3p. Hold drop-in hours (up to two a month) during the above range of suggested times.

Responsibilities:

Offer project-based workshops for preteens and teens (ages 9-12 and-12-18). Teach youth how to thread their sewing machine, understand the parts of the machine and the accessories, how to read a pattern, cut and measure material, iron if needed, and sew garment. Be available for up to two drop-in hours to help teen with a self-directed project.

Qualifications:

·         Minimum, age: 18

·         Patient, tolerant, and caring manner

·         Previous experience with preteens and teens a plus

·         Must be able to communicate clearly in a tactful, courteous and pleasant manner with library staff, children, and parents

·         Punctuality and reliability are a must

·         Should be able to explain sewing steps to teens and preteens

·         Work quietly and independently

·         Neat appearance

Training:

Staff will explain the policies for the building and teens as relevant and review the Volunteer Handbook with you.

As Volunteers you will:

Acquire new skills and gain recognized work experience. Expand your social horizons. Help local youth gain confidence and skills in sewing that they can use for life. Help build a literate community. Contribute to the success of your public library.
