Comprehensive Refugee Services/Refugee Youth Program

We need volunteers who could work with refugee high school aged youth who are struggling in school because of language and other barriers. We are in urgent need of volunteers who could tutor refugee youth at zip code 32804,32808,32809, 32839,34743,34744.

Volunteers must be able to

·       Visit refugee youth at their home or at public places like libraries, school media center or cafeteria or park to conduct tutoring.

·         Commit one hour per week to teach/tutor English skills (vocabularies, pronunciation, grammar, reading comprehension, writing, conversational English) Tutoring could be either face-to-face or via online platform e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Team or Google Classroom

·         Commit 6 months or more volunteering period with one refugee youth.

·         Assist youth with homework and/or school projects if needed.

·         Assist youth with core subjects such as English, Math, Science and Social Studies

·         Assist youth with preparation for state assessment test/SAT/ACT

·         Assist youth with GED preparation if applicable.

·         Assist youth to be technical savvy i.e., to become familiar with the use of smart phones, different Apps.

·         Regularly communicate with Youth’s parents, case manager to update the progress, and report if there are concerns or issues.

·         Record volunteer hours in CERVIS (volunteer website) and to case manager at the end of each month.

 

Desired qualifications to become a volunteer/tutor to refugee youth

Refugee Youth Volunteer must be at least 18-year-old. He/she must have

·         High School Diploma, Associate or Bachelor degree

·         Bilingual (either Spanish or Haitian Creole) is particularly useful, but not necessary.

·         Teaching experience or willing to teach refugee youth English, and (if necessary) other subjects.

·         Desire to make a difference in the life of refugee youth in a positive way.

·         Respect refugee family, their path, language, and culture and must maintain personal information be kept confidential.

·         Understanding and empathy of the struggle youth is experiencing.

·         Patience when teaching youth with limited English proficiency.

·         Background checked/fingerprinted for security clearance.

·         Attended video training on safety via Catholic Charities Volunteer Training Link.

 

After both Diocese of Orlando and DCF fingerprinting result returns satisfactory, case manager would arrange a meeting/introduction with refugee youth and volunteer. The meeting could be at the youth’s place, and parents would also need to be present. Once introduction has been made, and the exchange of information to be followed and method of communication established. Both tutor and youth must mutually agree on the scheduled tutoring. Tutoring time could be after school i.e., late afternoon, early evening and/or weekends. Volunteer should inform the youth case manager if there is any issue with scheduling, if the scheduled tutoring time has changed or youth fails to attend as agreed. Volunteer must also inform the youth’s family and case manager if he/she decides to stop volunteering.
