Kayak Guide/Tactical Cleanup Assistant Volunteer

Description:

Are you an experienced paddler willing to contribute your time and talent to the safety and enjoyment of our guests and members on various paddling programs? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you! Any interested volunteers will be directed to our Engagement Manager before being given the dates of paddle opportunities. 

 

Our paddling programs expand our entire 5000 sq. mile basin on lakes, ,gentle streams, and potentially up to class 3 whitewater. The volunteer kayak guide will always be accompanied by a Catawba Riverkeeper staff member on any program or project. It is preferred, but not required, that our volunteer guides have an up-to-date First Aid/CPR certification. For moving water environments, American Canoe Association or other reputable certifications are encouraged. 

 

Potential Volunteer Duties:

  • Assist with shuttle logistics
  • Help carry, load, and unload kayaks
  • Assist with guest gear up
  • Assist with setting safety on the water
  • Capture and share content

Below are the levels of volunteers and the requirements for each:

All levels must have your own gear and means to transport.

Level 1: (Flatwater to gently flowing)

  • PFD
  • Paddle
  • Kayak/Canoe/SUP
  • Whistle
  • Proper Footwear - secured to your foot with an ankle strap. No crocs.

Level 2: (Class 1-2)

  • PFD (Min Type 3)
  • Paddle
  • Kayak/Canoe/SUP
  • Whistle
  • Proper Footwear - secured to your foot with an ankle strap. No crocs.
  • Personal Med Kit
  • Throw Rope

Level 3: (Class 3)

  • PFD (Min Type 5)
  • Paddle
  • Kayak/Canoe (rated for whitewater)
  • Whistle
  • Proper Footwear - secured to your foot with an ankle strap. No crocs.
  • Personal Med Kit
  • Throw Rope
  • Helmet
  • Spray Skirt
  • Locking Carabiners
  • River Knife

Opportunities will be discussed with the manager and scheduled as you choose them. We will not just schedule you for a trip.
