Service Project Details

We are looking for volunteers to "adopt" 1km squares in the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) network, which takes a systematic approach to pollinator monitoring through a set of 95 1 km squares across the UK. The site network has been set up with the kind permission of the land-owners involved. Our 1km square volunteers set out pan traps to capture insect samples, survey flowers around the traps, and complete FIT Counts to monitor insect abundance (more details here).

On your first visit in April/May, a member of the PoMS team will meet you at your chosen square to show you how to complete the survey and give you the full kit you will need. From there, you will be able to visit the square independently once a month in June, July and August to complete the survey.

The UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) is part of the UK Pollinator Monitoring and Research Partnership. UKPoMS is the first scheme in the world to have begun (since 2017) generating systematic data on the abundance of bees, hoverflies and other flower-visiting insects at a national scale. Together with long-term occurrence records collated by the Bees, Wasps and Ants Recording Society and Hoverfly Recording Scheme, these data will form an invaluable resource from which to measure trends in pollinator populations and target conservation efforts.
