Project Description:

This volunteer opportunity is not eligible for court ordered community service hours.

 

Currently you must 18 years old to volunteer.

Ages 12-17 may volunteer with parent volunteer.

 

All volunteers need to have approved background check and liability waivers on file prior to being able to volunteer. 

 

Gwinnett Animal Welfare & Enforcement (AWE) shelter relies heavily on our volunteer staff, whether you can help an hour or all day it makes a difference in the welfare of the animals in our care.  There are many volunteer opportunities from helping the public or behind the scenes where laundry runs constantly. All volunteers will be with a senior shelter volunteer or kennel officer to start their volunteer activities.

 

Our volunteer program continues to grow and is a necessary part of everyday life at AWE. Serving as a volunteer is extremely rewarding, educational and fun. Our volunteers are committed, caring individuals who positively impact the lives of our animals. The valuable support and service they provide is truly appreciated by the animals, staff and visitors.

                                                                                                      Volunteer Job Descriptions

 

  • Adoption Counselor-                              Volunteers offer assistance at the customer service counter for visitors to the shelter looking to adoption a pet. Volunteer stay with the potential adopter, and guide them throughout the shelter to help them find that perfect pet -cat or dog for adoption.  Volunteers answer questions about the pet, the shelter, the adoption process, and assist them with their selection of an adoptable pet. Once the adopter finds a pet they take them to the customer service counter and stay with them until the adoption process is over, and the adopter takes their pet home
  • Greeter -
    Volunteers greet and offer assistance to the public at customer service. Greeters are a visitor's first contact with AWE through their warm greeting and courtesy may influence a person's decision to adopt from Animal Welfare.
  • Dog Walker -
    Volunteers walk and exercise shelter dogs that are available for adoption. Through exercise, dog walkers provide adoptable dogs' human contact, mental stimulation and basic command training.
  • Cat Socializer -
    Volunteers socialize available shelter cats. Through socializing, volunteers improve the quality of their lives and better prepare them for adoption into loving homes.
  • Community and Special Events -
    Volunteers assist staff in educating citizens about the services provided by AWE at local fairs, festivals and mobile adoption events.
  • Clerical Support -
    Volunteers assist customer services staff by preparing adoption packets that offer insightful information to ease the transition of an adopted pet into a new environment.
  • Bather/Groomer -
    Volunteers bathe and groom shelter dogs to create quality bonding time between themselves and the dogs and increase a dog's adopt-ability.
  • Foster-Volunteers may foster some of our animals once a home inspection is done.  Some animals need special care.  Fosters provide adoptable dogs' human contact, mental stimulation and basic command training. Cat fosters provide socializing,which  improve the quality of their lives and better prepare them for adoption into loving homes.

 

Volunteer hours:

Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-6:00pm  

Friday-Saturday, 8:30am-4:00pm

 

All Gwinnett County volunteers are required to agree and complete the waiver/release and consent forms before participation in any volunteer project or event. Please download, print, and fill out the required consent form. E-mail your completed waiver/release and consent form to the Event Organizer for approval.
