Host a Pop-Up Food Drive at Your Local Grocery Store

Project Description:

Gather a group of friends, colleagues, fellow students, or family members together to hold a mini food & fund drive at one of DMARC's grocery retail partners! A Red Barrel event is an easy and effective way to support our Food Pantry Network. Here's how it works:

STEP ONE: Contact our volunteer manager to select a site or sites (this activity is perfect for larger groups that are willing to divide and conquer!)

STEP TWO: On the day of your mini drive, create a small display inside the store entrance featuring the DMARC Red Barrel, a cart full of Hunger Sacks (at select stores only), and a cash jug for donations.

STEP THREE: Hand out flyers listing our most-needed items and encourage shoppers to purchase a few extras to place in the Red Barrel before they leave the store.

STEP FOUR: Deliver donations to our warehouse at 1435 Mulberry Street in Des Moines. Our volunteer manager can help coordinate these arrangements.

We will provide you with all of the necessary materials/supplies to make your mini drive successful.

Most groups are able to collect several hundred food items plus cash donations at these events, which typically last only two or three hours. Minimal time commitment = big impact!

Age Requirement:

For safety reasons, all volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult (over the age of 18) at all times during their volunteer shift.

We look forward to working with you!
