Special Olympics Athletes Need Your Help!

Volunteer your time and medical services. Give athletes the quality of life they deserve!

 

Healthy Hearing began in 1998 and is designed for the following purposes:

  1. To study the prevalence of hearing loss in athletes competing in Special Olympics events
  2. To screen the hearing of athletes and notify them, their coaches, and others if follow-up care is needed
  3. To teach and train students, audiologists, physicians, healthcare providers and educators about hearing loss and ear health problems in individuals with intellectual disabilities, and about solutions to these problems. 

WHO WE NEED:

Area Clinical Directors

Proven interest of service

        Licensed professional Audiologist

        Active in or member of a local, state, or national professional organization

        Demonstrated leadership ability

        Volunteer commitment of 2-3 years

 

Day of Screeners

Audiologists, Speech Pathologists and students, trained on-site to provide all-day screening exams.

 

AREA CLINICAL DIRECTOR ROLE:

        Attend a one-day, train-the-trainer workshop and practical experience at a Special Olympics Florida competition

        Recruit/train screening volunteers for the venue in your area

        Supervise the venue

        Report data to Special Olympics Florida

        Evaluate event

        Develop network for follow-up referrals for athletes

        Oversee 1-2 events annually

·        Experiencing the joy of seeing athletes know if they have been diagnosed with hearing loss that help if available to them and they will be able to receive a free hearing aid from Phonak and Special Olympics.

·        Enjoying the camaraderie of working together with a group of your fellow professionals

·        Having the ability of increasing you the number of patients in your practice: your practice will grow once word gets around that you work with persons with intellectual disabilities

·        You can earn credit for hours volunteering if your school, agency, or professional organization requires it.
