Description:
Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources is seeking individuals interested in volunteering for the Mordecai Garden Volunteer program. This is an ongoing, year-long opportunity.
Mordecai Historic Park lies in the heart of downtown Raleigh and is a historical landmark that showcases one of the largest plantations in Wake County, the oldest house still in its original location in Raleigh, and is also President Andrew Johnson's birthplace.
Duties and Impact: Volunteers will work alongside the Mordecai Historic Park’s gardener to assist in keeping the grounds beautiful for all to enjoy. The primary goal of the volunteer group is to help care for the Ellen Mordecai Garden, a recreated 19th century kitchen garden with an attached grape arbor and orchard. Garden volunteers may also assist with additional areas of the park landscape.
Responsibilities may include planting and harvesting heirloom vegetables and herbs, planting spring and winter annual beds and seasonal bulbs, as well as related tasks such as pruning, weeding, deadheading, seed collection, watering, and more. Volunteer workdays will occur on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – noon based on staff's availability.
Work Environment: Volunteers will be working outside in the elements. There is the possibility for uneven ground. There will be a restroom on site.
Requirements:
Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
