Opportunity Name:
Write Letters of Support to Alaskan Seniors (Virtual)

Description:

Every month, Food Bank of Alaska packs and distributes 2100 food boxes for low-income seniors across Alaska. Help us personalize these boxes by writing letters of support. During this challenging time, a kind note can make a huge impact!

Who will receive my note?

Your note will be printed and packed into a Senior Food Box. These boxes are distributed to seniors in communities across Alaska, including Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, Upper-Susitna, St. Paul Island, Kenai Peninsula, Wrangell, and Glennallen.

How many notes does Food Bank of Alaska need?

We pack 2100 food boxes for low-income seniors every month, so every note helps and the need is ongoing! Send us as many notes as you’d like, or make it a group or family activity.

What should I write about?

Suggestions include:

  • Hopeful messages, well wishes, quotes, messages of solidarity, and positive thoughts.
  • Brief details about yourself: family, hobbies, work, interests, etc.
  • Why do you volunteer with the Food Bank of Alaska?
  • Why is fighting hunger in Alaska important to you?

Other guidelines about content:

  1. Be kind, thoughtful, and sensitive.
  2. Don't make assumptions. COVID-19 has been a difficult time for Alaskans from all walks of life, so please refrain from using language that may communicate any assumptions about a particular group or client's situation. Our clients may have already been facing challenges prior to COVID-19, or they may be using our services for the first time.
  3. Avoid mention of religion, politics, prayers, holidays, etc. We serve people with a diverse range of lifestyles, faith traditions, culture, and beliefs. We ask that the cards reflect this inclusiveness. Your note should resonate with anyone.
  4. Exclude the date (day, month, and year) or mention of holidays or seasons (New Year's, holiday season, Christmas, etc). Notes are collected and distributed year-round.
  5. Letters should be long enough to reflect the amount of time awarded. The 30 minutes offered for this activity includes any time spent logging in, writing, and submitting letters.

Can I drop off letters or email them to you?

Yes. You can drop off letters at our warehouse in Anchorage. Mark them as "for the Volunteer Manager" and leave them with the receptionist.

You can also scan and email letters to volunteer@foodbankofalaska.org

Can I receive volunteer service hours for this project?

Yes. Enter your full name and email address when prompted in the form and 30 minutes per letter will be logged to your volunteer account.
