Project Description:

Position Summary:

Along with City Park Interpreters, volunteers assist school age children (K- 6th grade) in participating with our School Programs. Specific duties may vary depending on the volunteer’s interest but all volunteers will assist with hands on activities and leading small groups of children through the Visitor and Nature Center’s exhibits and on guided nature walks along the paved Central Garden Trail. School Programs will help children in understanding, enjoying and caring for the Garden of Gods Park while aligning with Colorado State Academic Standards for Science, Physical Life, and Earth Systems.

School Programs are not limited to but include:

Geology of the Park (for grades 3 – 6th) – This program introduces information about the three rock types, the three geologic processes, and the two rock formations seen along the Central Garden Trail.

Meet the Park (for grades K – 2nd) – This program introduces basic ecology concepts about plants and animals found in the Park’s life zones of plains, foothills, and mountains.

Ongoing training will be available throughout the year along with educational resources being available to expand their knowledge base.   Successful volunteers tend to be outgoing, approachable, and possess excellent customer service skills while also possessing a willingness to both learn and teach.

 

Schedule:

School Programs run from late September through May each year with a break between late December through February. Successful applicants must commit to one, two hour shift a week for at least one school year with priority given to those willing to commit to more shifts. Programs are currently held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only.

 

Age Requirement:

18 and older (special consideration possible for younger volunteers).

 

Additional Information:

All volunteers are required to register online as a City of Colorado Springs Volunteer which requires submitting to a background check. Volunteers also enjoy a free one-year membership to Friends of Garden of the Gods (FOGG) and a 25% discount on food and merchandise inside the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center. Volunteers must also acquire their own volunteer shirt ($15.00) with free shirts available for those in need.
