Project Description:

Volunteer position title: Refugee Youth Mentor

 

Volunteer position description: As a refugee youth mentor, you will visit with a refugee youth every week for at least a 6 month period in order to help them learn various aspects of American culture and help improve their English skills.

 

Schedule requirements: The volunteer will work with the refugee youth and their family to determine as weekly schedule that works for both of you. The schedule may be outside of normal business hours or on weekends, so this position is a good option for those who work full time.

 

Commitment requirements: The Refugee Youth Mentor volunteer is expected to commit to 6 months of service, and is required to undergo a background screening through the diocese as well as through DCF. More details will be provided upon submission of an application to this position.

 

Qualifications:


  • A willingness to interact with youth from different cultures
  • Must be able to work with the youth in their own homes
  • Needs to be able to patiently work with people with limited English ability
  • Volunteer must complete a phone or in-person meeting with Maria Diez before completing a background screening to ensure the position will be a good fit.

Age Restrictions: Refugee Youth Mentor volunteers must be 21 or older.
