CSFP (Senior Box) Distribution Volunteer Corps

Project Description:

CSFP Volunteer Corps

Join the mission of Second Harvest to create pathways to nutritious food.  Be a part of the CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program) Volunteer Corps to distribute food out to senior citizens at Second Harvest.  Funded by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, “The CSFP works to improve the health of low-income persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods. USDA distributes both food and administrative funds to participating states and Indian Tribal Organizations to operate CSFP.”

Overview of the Program

In working with partner agencies, Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio distributes more than 1,800 CSFP boxes per month.  In addition, approximately 60 CSFP boxes are directly distributed at the Nordson Food Distribution Center.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • On the first Tuesday (9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) and Wednesday (3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.) of each month, CSFP Volunteer Corps members welcome and distribute CSFP boxes in a drive-thru model.
  • In preparation for distribution, CSFP volunteers set up a pallet of CSFP shelf-stable boxes and additional food in the partner agency pick-up area (8:30 – 9:00 on the first Tuesday & 2:30 – 3:00 on the first Wednesday).
  • As a community member drives up, CSFP volunteers greet them, confirm the name from the existing CSFP list, and load food into the trunk.  It is required that a volunteer is able to lift and carry a CSFP box that weighs between 30 ad 35 pounds.
