Summer Service-Learning Opportunity

 

Middle school and high students are invited to join the Family House for our annual service-learning experience for teens! This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are looking to explore nonprofit or healthcare professions and who enjoy making a difference in the community.

 

2024 Teens in the House Dates:

• June 10-13, 2024, Monday-Thursday, 10:00a – 12:30p each day OR 
• June 24-27, 2024, Monday-Thursday, 10:00a – 12:30p each day OR
• July 15-18, 2024, Monday-Thursday, 10:00a – 12:30p each day 

Location:

On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week, students will meet at the SECU Family House at 1970 Baldwin Lane in Winston-Salem.

 

On Wednesday of each week, students will meet at the Health Sciences Department on Forsyth Tech Community College's main campus, which is two miles from the Family House. We will share details, directions, and parking information with everyone who registers.

 

Additional Information:

This experience is open to rising middle school through high school students. During group activities, students will be grouped with teens of similar ages.

 

Students will receive a total of 8 hours of community service credit and a certificate of completion.

 

The cost of the program is $50. This covers supplies and program expenses. Once you have registered, we will send you payment information. Scholarships are available. If you’re interested in a scholarship, please email lindley.curtis@familyhousews.org.

 

Here is a sample schedule (details subject to change):

Monday:

• Enjoy an introduction to the Family House and take a deep dive into the operations of our non-profit organization. Hear from staff members about what goes on behind the scenes.
• Engage in support services that Family House guests enjoy, including art + wellness activities.
• Participate in hands-on service projects.

Tuesday:

• Learn about nonprofit organizations, philanthropy, fundraising & grant writing.
• Design and put together ideas for your own nonprofit, write grant proposals, and consider marketing plans.
• Participate in hands-on service projects.

Wednesday:

• Enjoy a private, hands-on tour of the Health Sciences Department on Forsyth Tech's main campus. Learn from Forsyth Tech's instructors how healthcare professionals are trained in a variety of fields. 

Thursday:

• Engage in support services that Family House guests enjoy, including pet therapy.
• Participate in hands-on service projects.
• Wrap up with end-of-the week celebration and recognitions.
