English Language Learning Tutor Volunteer (Virtual)

Overview

At Educational Alliance’s 2Gen: Generations Learning Together, we know that we are stronger together and we can lift each other up through learning, advocacy, and community-building. We provide workshops and individualized coaching in parenting, self-care, English language learning (ESOL), citizenship support, career advancement, and continuing education. We believe that universal education is a necessary building block for strong communities, and that everyone should have the opportunity to lead a fulfilled and joyful life.

 

We’re looking for volunteers to support our Adult ESOL Program, which provides a rich, immersive curriculum to the MCC community for free. Many of our students could use additional support outside of the classroom setting, and that is where our volunteer tutors can help. You’ll be providing support in reading comprehension, writing and more in small group settings. Volunteers should speak Mandarin, Cantonese or Spanish in addition to English to best communicate and tutor the students.

 

 

WHAT IS YOUR COMMITMENT?

  • Provide ESOL tutoring to adult students in small virtual group settings (typically 3-5 students)
  • Utilize curriculum and resources provided to support students in their individualized needs with guidance and encouragement
  • Commit to a weekly shift (minimum 2 hours) based on your language skills.
  • Schedule for Chinese speakers - M & Tu, 10AM-12PM and 3-5PM; W, 3PM-5PM only; Schedule for Spanish speakers - Th 10AM-12PM only.
  • Attend a training session prior to starting your volunteer role with 2Gen staff to learn best practices, and receive curriculum and resources
  • This is a virtual opportunity and you will need access to the internet, and Zoom

  • Complete the volunteer application and be sure to include which days of the week and times you would be available to volunteer in the additional details section
  • Have a brief phone call with a member of the volunteer team.
  • Have an phone or virtual call with a member of the 2Gen team

 

APPLY TO BE A VOLUNTEER IF YOU…

  • Are patient working with adult students learning and practicing their English
  • Bilingual in Mandarin, Cantonese or Spanish (and available for those particular sessions)
  • Are willing to commit to weekly volunteering and available during weekdays
  • Want to help community members overcome obstacles to furthering their education and having new opportunities open to them
  • College students studying education or those interested in teaching ESOL are encouraged to apply
