Event Description:

Special Olympics Minnesota is currently seeking volunteers to help with the 2019 Summer Games at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul. Summer Games will be held June 21-23 and includes basketball, swimming and track & field.

 

Volunteer shifts are still available on June 22-23, to sign up or inquire about other available slots, please contact volunteers@somn.org.

  • This event is held indoors at the Anderson Rec Center.
  • All volunteers will receive a souvenir t-shirt to ensure that they are identifiable during the event. They must be worn when attending the event.
  • Orientation and Training is scheduled to start at the time you sign up for. Please arrive at the check-in area 10-15 minutes early to allow time to check-in, receive your t-shirt and be on time for your training.
  • You will receive a reminder email with additional parking and check-in information one to two weeks before the event.

Age Eligibility for Event Volunteers

  • 15 years and older can volunteer by themselves.
  • 12-14 year olds must be accompanied by parent, guardian, or chaperone.
  • 11 years and younger are not given volunteer assignments, but are welcomed and encouraged to be cheerleaders as long as they are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone.  Please do not register for any position.
  • 12-14 year olds in a group situation need a 4 to 1 ratio-meaning one adult (18 years old or older) for every three children.  These groups usually include scout troops, school classes, church groups, etc.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteer training will be provided for all positions--you don't need to have any experience, just a great attitude and willingness to be a part of a day that athletes look forward to all year!

  • Awards Announcer - Announce names of athletes as awards are presented.
  • Awards Assistant - Help organizes and presents the medals to the athletes as names are being called.
  • Basketball Skills Escort - Accompany the athletes around each basketball skill station. 
  • Basketball Skills Staging - Preparing the athletes so escorts can take them to the stations.
  • Basketball Skills Station - Stationed at a basket or skill area coordinating a specific activity.
  • Official - Officiate a half court or full court basketball game. *must have basketball knowledge and comfortable making judgement calls. If you would like to register for this role, please contact volunteers@somn.org.
  • Scorer Table - Assist with running scoreboard or writing down stats on score sheet (2 people at each table).

Event Meeting Location: Volunteer check-in is located at Scooters in the Anderson Student Center. Parking and shuttle information will be provided one to two weeks before the event.
